UEFA has imposed a ban on referee David Coote in connection with a video related to Euro 2024.

UEFA has sanctioned former Premier League referee David Coote due to his actions pertaining to the Euro 2024 tournament.

David Coote, a former Premier League referee, has been subjected to disciplinary action by UEFA following incidents related to his conduct during Euro 2024.

His termination from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) occurred in December, subsequent to an inquiry into his professional behavior. This dismissal followed his initial suspension by the PGMOL on November 11th, stemming from the dissemination of a video in which he made disparaging remarks regarding Liverpool Football Club and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp.

An additional investigation was initiated by UEFA two days later, prompted by the publication of photographs in the Sun newspaper. These images, purportedly taken during the previous summer's European Championship, appeared to depict Mr. Coote inhaling a white substance through a rolled-up United States currency note. Mr. Coote held the position of video assistant referee at the tournament in Germany.

Buttler has resigned from his role as England's captain for white-ball.

UEFA has stated that Mr. Coote "violated the fundamental principles of appropriate conduct" and was penalized for "bringing the sport of football, and UEFA specifically, into disrepute." He is prohibited from officiating in European competitions until June 30, 2026.

In an interview with the Sun newspaper the previous month, Mr. Coote disclosed his sexual orientation and issued an apology for his conduct.

On November 27, 2024, the Football Association commenced a separate inquiry regarding allegations that Mr. Coote had discussed the issuance of a yellow card prior to a 2019 Championship match between Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion. He has consistently denied these allegations.
