Buttler has resigned from his role as England's captain for white-ball.

Jos Buttler has relinquished his position as captain of England's cricket teams.

Jos Buttler, aged 34, has announced his decision to step down from his role as captain of England's limited-overs cricket teams. His final appearance as captain will occur in the team's concluding group stage match against South Africa on Saturday.

England's elimination from the Champions Trophy, following their defeat by Afghanistan on Wednesday, marks their third consecutive underperformance in white-ball tournaments under Buttler's leadership. This follows their unsuccessful title defenses in the 2023 50-over World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

"I believe this is the appropriate course of action, both for myself and for the team," Buttler stated during an impromptu press conference in Lahore. "I have reached the conclusion of my tenure."

He further acknowledged that England's performance in the Champions Trophy was influenced by a "residual effect" from previous tournaments.

Victor Osimhen secured a crucial victory for Galatasaray.

Buttler, a member of England's 2019 World Cup-winning team, assumed the captaincy in 2022 following the international retirement of Eoin Morgan. He subsequently led England to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia that same year. However, since the commencement of the 2023 World Cup in India, England has experienced a notable decline in performance.

The team secured only three victories out of nine matches in that tournament and has suffered 12 defeats in their subsequent 16 One Day Internationals (ODIs), including a current sequence of six consecutive losses.

Chelsea's £1.5 billion spending spree has raised eyebrows.

While England reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in the preceding year, they were decisively defeated by India and exhibited inconsistent performance in the earlier stages of the competition.

"My predominant sentiments are those of sadness and disappointment, although I anticipate these feelings will subside over time, allowing me to resume my enjoyment of cricket," Buttler remarked. "Furthermore, I will have the opportunity to reflect upon the profound privilege of captaining my nation and the associated honors."
