The FA Cup will break new ground by implementing semi-automated offside technology for the first time.
The FA Cup's fifth round will mark the debut of semi-automated offside technology in English domestic football.
The Football Association (FA) has announced the implementation of semi-automated offside technology in the FA Cup's fifth round, marking its debut in English domestic football.
This technology will be utilized in the seven fifth-round matches held at Premier League grounds, with plans for its Premier League introduction later this season following successful trials in the FA Cup. The system aims to enhance efficiency and reduce subjective human interpretation in offside calls. Currently, VAR officials m
ust determine the precise moment of the pass, the defender's position, and the attacker's position – all of which will now be automatically analyzed by the technology.
Using artificial intelligence, the system tracks player and ball movement to determine onside or offside status.
Manuel Akanji will undergo surgery for a muscle injury.
Dedicated cameras have been installed in all 20 Premier League stadiums to facilitate this process.
While initially planned for the 2024-25 Premier League season, its introduction was moved up to the FA Cup for further testing. UEFA already uses this technology in the Champions League.
The FA explained that the system speeds up the process and provides more precise virtual offside lines, enhancing the viewing experience without altering the fundamental accuracy of decisions.
In addition to the semi-automated offside technology, VAR will be in use for all eight FA Cup fifth-round ties, with in-stadium announcements by referees.
The fifth round is scheduled for the weekend of March 1st.
