Manuel Akanji will undergo surgery for a muscle injury and is expected to be sidelined for approximately 10 weeks.

Manuel Akanji faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, requiring surgery that will keep him out of action for up to 10 weeks.

Manchester City's Manuel Akanji will undergo surgery this Saturday for a groin injury sustained during Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the Swiss international will be sidelined for eight to ten weeks.

While Jack Grealish also suffered a groin injury in the same match, his is less severe, though his availability for Saturday's Premier League game against Newcastle remains uncertain.

Guardiola indicated Grealish's situation isn't as serious as Akanji's, but he's doubtful for the upcoming game.

Akanji's absence is a significant blow for City, as he's been a key player this season, starting 20 of their 24 Premier League matches and making 30 appearances in all competitions.

This injury further compounds City's defensive woes, following recent absences of John Stones, Nathan Ake, and Ruben Dias, and the long-term loss of Rodri to an ACL injury in September.

Guardiola praised Akanji's commitment and effort this season, highlighting his versatility and willingness to play through difficult conditions, ultimately acknowledging that his body had reached its limit.

City, currently fifth in the Premier League and 16 points behind leaders Liverpool, face a challenging period with these injury setbacks.
