Pop musician Katy Perry is scheduled to participate in an upcoming spaceflight aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket, which will be composed entirely of female crew members.
Ms. Perry will be joined by Lauren Sanchez, fiancée of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos; CBS presenter Gayle King; former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe; civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen; and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
Blue Origin has stated that this mission will mark the first all-female spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova's solo mission, conducted by the Soviet Union in 1963.
While a precise launch date has not been specified, Blue Origin has indicated that the flight is planned for the spring season.
Given Ms. Perry’s scheduled “Lifetimes Tour” from April 23rd to November 11th, it is anticipated that the spaceflight will occur prior to the commencement of her tour.
"If I had been told that I would be a part of the first all-female crew in space, I would have believed it. As a child, nothing was beyond the realm of possibility," Ms. Perry stated, as reported by Newsweek.
The NS-31 mission will be the 11th human spaceflight conducted by the New Shepard rocket and the 31st overall mission in its program. To date, the program has transported 52 individuals to space.
According to Blue Origin, a typical New Shepard flight lasts approximately 11 minutes. The flight is fully automated, operating without pilots, and will carry the passengers past the Karman line, which is internationally recognized as the boundary of space.
Blue Origin has attributed the organization of the mission to Lauren Sanchez, stating in their press release that she is "honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come."
Ms. Sanchez initially announced her intention to fly with an all-female crew on a Blue Origin rocket in a 2023 interview with Vogue magazine, stating that they were "paving the way for women."
This mission represents the latest instance of celebrities embarking on space travel.
Jeff Bezos himself participated in the company's inaugural manned mission in 2021. Good Morning America co-host Michael Strahan and Star Trek actor William Shatner have also been launched into space aboard Blue Origin rockets.
Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Galactic, undertook a journey aboard his company's VSS Unity spacecraft in July 2021. However, SpaceX founder Elon Musk has yet to participate in a spaceflight.
