Inter Milan staged a remarkable comeback to secure a victory against Monza, further solidifying their position at the top of the Serie A standings. After falling behind early in the match, Inter demonstrated resilience and tactical prowess to overturn the deficit and claim a crucial win.
Inter Milan, the reigning Italian champions, extended their lead at the top of Serie A to four points over second-placed Napoli, who were set to face Fiorentina on Sunday. Despite being heavy favorites against a Monza side that had accumulated only 14 points this season, Inter found themselves trailing by two goals in the first half. Marko Arnautovic managed to pull one back just before halftime, giving the hosts a glimmer of hope.
In the second half, Inter dominated possession but struggled to break through until the 64th minute, when Hakan Calhanoglu leveled the score. The decisive moment came in the 77th minute, as Argentine captain Lautaro Martinez rose to the occasion, scoring with a header that took a slight deflection off Monza's Greek defender, Giorgos Kyriakopoulos, to secure the victory.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Inter's hard-fought win increased the pressure on Napoli, who have struggled in recent weeks, recording four draws and one defeat in their last five matches ahead of their clash with seventh-placed Fiorentina.
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi praised his team's composure, stating, "In Serie A, every match is difficult. We created 30 or 31 goal-scoring opportunities, and our victory was well-deserved. My players remained calm and focused throughout."
Meanwhile, city rivals AC Milan faced a similar scenario in their away match against struggling Lecce. Christian Pulisic emerged as the hero, scoring twice to help Milan secure a 3-2 comeback victory. The U.S. international's second goal, coming nine minutes from time, ended Milan's three-match losing streak in Serie A and marked their first win since February 15. Reflecting on the result, Pulisic said, "We're in a tough phase, and this is the kind of victory that brings much-needed relief."
Both Milanese clubs demonstrated resilience in their respective matches, showcasing the competitive nature of Serie A as the season progresses.
