Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk receives positive drugs test result.
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk tests positive for 'adverse finding' in drug test.
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been provisionally suspended by the Football Association after a drugs test sample he submitted tested positive for a banned substance.
The Ukraine international has missed the last five matches for Chelsea, with head coach Enzo Maresca attributing his absence to illness. Mudryk's most recent appearance was on November 28.
According to reports from The Times, Mudryk claims the positive result is due to contamination and denies intentionally taking any banned substances. The results of a B sample are still pending, but Chelsea has expressed full support for the player, and an internal investigation is underway.
Ukrainian reports have named the substance involved, though this has yet to be confirmed by either the FA or Chelsea. The substance is not available in the UK but appears on the WADA list of banned substances.
A statement from Chelsea read: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm the Football Association recently contacted our player Mykhailo Mudryk regarding an adverse finding in a routine urine test.
"Both the Club and Mykhailo fully support The FA’s testing programme, and all our players, including Mykhailo, are regularly tested. Mykhailo has confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances. Both Mykhailo and the Club will now work with the relevant authorities to establish the cause of the adverse finding. The Club will not be commenting further."
In an Instagram statement, Mudryk expressed his shock at the situation, maintaining his innocence and confirming he hopes to be back on the pitch soon.
